I'm full of it!

Challenges, that is. Full of challenges. Er, well, if I was perfectly honest, I'd have to admit that writing fiction, by definition, requires being full of it... Anyway, in addition to the A to Z challenge, I'm adding a reading challenge too. I figured I might as well since I read so many books anyway, particularly romance. So here's the deets:

The Reading Romances Challenge 2012:

The goal with this challenge is to read the widest variety of books possible, as many sub-genres as you can find, as opposed to just quantity. This is totally an "expand your horizons" kind of challenge. Since my genre selection has gotten pretty narrow, I figured this would push me to read outside of my habitual path. So here are the guidlines:
  • This challenge runs all year from 01 Jan through 31 Dec.
  • Anyone can join, even if you don't blog. You can post reviews to any book site (Amazon, Goodreads, Shelfari, Smashwords, etc.).
  • A list of romance sub-genres and themes will be posted to choose from each month.
  • You can list your books before reading them (by leaving a comment on the post with the topics for that month) or just put them in a wrap-up post. If you list them, don’t feel obligated to read them, changes are welcomed!
  • When you sign up in the linky, put the direct link to your post about joining the Reading Romances Challenge. If you don’t have a blog, please link it to the page where you post your reviews (Goodreads, Shelfari, Amazon etc).
  • You don’t have to participate every month, but please try to!
  • Sign-ups will be open until Dec 15, 2012, so feel free to join at any time throughout the year.
There will be random giveaways for active participants throughout the year. Yay, contest! If you'd like to join me in this challenge, sign up right here on Reading Romances. I'm trying to avoid challenges I already know I can do in favor of choosing ones that push me to be better or to try something different. What challenges are you braving this year? What keeps you motivated to meet your challenges?

In other news, one of my fav paranormal romance stories ever:

Alex. Two weeks...

  1. Sounds interesting. However, for me, the most basic challenge in reading romance is....reading romance.

Came to it extremely late in life (like 2008) simply because that wasn't something you read when growing up in my world.

But I have read a few of them, mostly African-American (I have no idea why I migrated to that sub-genre), and they've managed to intrigue me enough to search out others from time to time at the library.

  2. Don't think I'll do a romance challenge, but glad you're participating in the A to Z again! And so stoked for Underworld Awakening. Kate!

  3. I never do join this challenges; I find that I accomplish less than if I just set weekly goals for myself (basic ones, like "read this book and review it" or "read this one--it's been in my TBR too long"). I applaud those that do them, but they just don't work well for me. :)

I never have seen Underworld (any of them) from start to finish; one of these days I need to do so, they look intriguing (if I can get past the blood and pulling bad guy's apart, I guess, which are typically not my kind of things). :D

    Enjoy!

  4. i'm still on the fence about the a-z challenge.
But that readind challenge sounds kind of cool. I like the idea of broadening your horizons, so to speak

  5. @G Glad you came around! The romance genre is actually a lot more widespread than people imagine. Even many books classified as non-romance genre have elements of romance in them. Most major blockbuster movies have romantic elements.

@Alex I knew you were waiting for that ;) I'm going to see if I can't find me some sneak preview tickets...

@TBQ I imagine with your blog, you don't have much need to broaden your horizons, lol. Especially with your TBR pile--holy cow!!

@Sarah Best thing about the challenge is it's for yourself. You don't really have to post much, maybe a roundup once per month. I'm doing it because I love romance and it provides suggested reading in a multitude of sub-genres. Oh, and that A to Z won't be too taxing when you plan ahead a little. We have time ;)
